Blast from the past!

Blast from the past!

I was there when Air New Zealand AirPoints' frequent flyer programme first began.

Did you know I was one of the very first people involved with Air New Zealand's frequent flyer programme, AirPoints..?

This is a brochure cover for The Phone, which was set up as the call centre for Air New Zealand when they first introduced their brand new frequent flyer programme, AirPoints.

Back then passengers could only earn points for international travel.

I was Assistant Supervisor - yes, that’s me, top right! (1993 -1996).

Our office was originally located in a little back street of Parnell, Auckland, and then moved to Baycorp House in Hopetoun Street, off Karangahape Road in Auckland City.

AirPoints travellers thought we were in Air New Zealand House, which was downtown, in Queen Elizabeth Square, in Auckland's CBD.

When customers phoned up they often asked about our 'beautiful harbour view', but we weren’t allowed to say where we were actually located!

There was a total of three staff when I started working at AirPoints, and I still remember co-worker, Debbie, laughing at me while I tried to double-click a mouse - something I hadn't ever done before!  We had a team of 21 when I left.

AirPoints eventually relocated to Christchurch, growing into a massive call centre with around 100 staff.
